Patchwork and Quilting Group

During lockdown Barbara Thornburn started up a Patchwork and Quilting group. She was very generous in sharing her extensive knowledge and expertise with the group. Prior to each meeting she sent out information sheets and YouTube links to support the classes. At each meeting she demonstrated a new patchwork technique and showed us her own worked examples. Members then practiced what they have learnt in their own homes. There was always plenty of time for questions and discussion.

We were not only taught patchwork techniques, but also learnt about the tools and materials needed and the importance of colour and design. Among other techniques we experimented with blocks such as the disappearing 4 patch, log cabin, Roman stripes, string quilting and English paper piercing.

Sadly Barbara has passed away, but we decided to continue the group in her memory. Members new and old still meet once a month in each others homes and continue helping each other with various projects. Recently we have been making quilts, including some using Barbara’s material, to go out to Ukraine .

The galleries below show some of the block samples, cushions, table runners, bags and quilts etc that we have produced …so far.

The four seasons inspired table runner and 4 placemats made by the group and raffled at WI meetings.

Children’s quilts made by some members of the group that were sent out to an orphanage in Ukraine.

A few of the tote bags made by members and sold to raise money for the Folkestone charity Baby Basics .

Next meeting Tuesday 13 January 2pm at Julia’s house.
