Grandma’s Chocolate Malteser Bars.

Kate has sent in this recipe for a sweet treat that you may like to make with our grandchildren – or perhaps even for yourself!

Ingredients:

  • 10 oz packet of big marshmallows
  • 10 oz butter
  • 20 oz (aprox) of rice crispies
  • 4 ozs Ovaltine (Or any malted milk powder)
  • 10 ozs Maltesers (chopped up or just split)
  • 4 ozs chocolate chips or cooking chocolate.

Method:

  • Melt marshmallows and butter in a large saucepan. Hint – use a fairly low heat and keep stirring as the marshmallows can easily stick to the bottom of your pan and burn.
  • When all is melted and mixed well remove from the heat
  • Stir in all the cereal, plus 3 oz of the malted milk powder and 6 oz the broken Maltesers.
  • When all is covered in the marshmallow mixture press into a greased or lined13 x 9 inch pan.
  • Press down firmly to make sure that slices stick together when cold – hint use a plastic cake icing leveller as the mixture will still be quite warm.
  • In a microwave safe bowl melt the chocolate chips and stir until smooth
  • Stir in the remaining malt powder, spread over the cereal bar mixture , sprinkle with the remaining crushed Maltesers and press them into the chocolate.
  • Let it stand until cool and then mark out in squares- hint don’t leave it until it is really cold as it will then be too hard and not easy to cut into uniform square

Should you want your bars to be a little more sticky add less cereal.
