September 2018

14th September Monthly Report.

President Kate Dilks welcomed 46 members and 7 visitors to the September meeting held in The Lads’ Club. The record of the last meeting (July!) was taken as read and signed.

50 members and guests had attended a very successful annual Pot Luck Lunch in August and 16 members had a very interesting visit to St. Augustine’s Priory which included a very good Afternoon Tea.

As from next month the monthly competition will be “A flower from my garden”. Members were reminded that next month is the Annual Meeting and nominations were invited for the committee.

The Christmas lunch will be on December 4th at Lympne Castle and Hortense Oates was taking names of those wishing to go. Our website is proving to be a success and Julie Andrews was thanked for her hard work. You can find us at

The next announcement produced cheers and loud applause as Kate told us that Dee Mackay and her partner of 25 years, Jim Pocock, had recently secretly eloped to Gretna Green and tied the knot over the anvil. Congratulations!

After this excitement it was time for coffee and biscuits and of course time to catch up with friends.

Our speaker was Martin Newcombe who gave an illustrated talk entitled Garden Wildlife and told us how we could encourage birds and other wild life into our gardens. Martin told us about birds, butterflies, moths, worm, slugs, snails, spiders, mosses, lichens, and fungi as well as the dreaded Japanese Knotweed. Martin interspersed the facts with amusing anecdotes and folklore.

Mary Hunter gave the vote of thanks for what was an interesting and amusing talk.
