June 2020

On Friday June 12th, 2020 President Margaret Alcock welcomed 22 members to the first ever Zoom meeting of Castle Green WI. When everyone had said hello and settled down a bell was rung as usual to start the meeting, only a small bell not the big one. All the members were then “muted” by our IT expert Julie Andrews. Valerie Humphries was thanked for the beautiful flower arrangement for the President’s “table”. Valerie had said that she was down to do the flowers and so she had, using flowers from her garden and she brought them to the President’s home the day before the meeting.

Secretary Daphne Gazeley read the minutes of the March meeting which were approved and signed in the usual manner. Treasurer Lynda Daly gave a finance report. Everyone then “unmuted” themselves so that the business items could be discussed and commented on.

There was also time for a general chat as this would normally be coffee time and some members present did indeed have a cup of coffee.

Everyone was then muted again to listen to four committee members with stories of lockdown.

Barbara Thorburn was the first of our speakers and she told us about making Haloumi cheese, buttermilk, and baguettes. She had completed a 1000-piece jigsaw and a quilt for her granddaughter’s 18th birthday. She had also found time to hold a virtual family dinner party. To round off her talk she read out her Lockdown WI Ballad.

Jackie Vickerman’s talk was about how she found a grenade shaped object whilst gardening. She was advised to report it and two police officers arrived who promptly called in the Bomb Squad. They decided it was an old fishing weight to hold nets down.

Julie Andrews told us of how she and her husband Richard set up our Blog. It is a private and password protected site so that only Castle Green members could access it and it has been a great success.

Margaret Alcock told of the “street party” held in The Close on VE Day. Everyone taking part sat at tables and chairs in their front gardens or on their drives and had Afternoon Tea. Gardens were decorated with bunting and flags. Given the layout of The Close neighbours were able to walk down the middle of the road and talk to each other. Social distancing of course.

Barbara Thorburn gave a vote of thanks to Julie Andrews and Margaret Alcock for organising this first ever Zoom meeting and for their work in keeping Castle Green WI going during these strange times.

Everyone then unmuted themselves and there was a general chat and discussion about topics for the July meeting. Christine Burgoyne had suggested that members could talk about the good things that have come out of lockdown. Kate Dilks suggested a quiz and the possibility of a Calendar girls type photograph. She disappeared and then returned holding a strategically placed plate of her famous meringues!! The laughter must have been heard all over Saltwood and Hythe. See the Blog! On this happy note we said our goodbyes.

My thanks go to the committee for their support and to the members who came to the meeting. You made it an easier experience than I had expected. Hopefully, I will not be so nervous next month! Margaret Alcock.
