12th July Monthly Report.
Our President, Kate Dilks, welcomed 53 members and 1 guest to the July meeting. She thanked the coffee hostesses Alex Tubman, Kay Hygate and Romany Cowans and herself for providing the flowers for the top table. The record of the last meeting was taken as read and signed by the President. Members attention was drawn to the various Federation events listed in the East Kent News and on this website.
Mary Wheatley had organised the National Federation of WIs Huxley Cup for flower arranging at the Kent County Show and we were pleased to learn that East Kent Federation had come second.
The previous Friday a successful “meet the committee” coffee morning had been held at the home of Margaret Alcock for new members.
After our coffee break and more chat, we welcomed back Martin Newcombe whose illustrated talk was entitled The Countryside of Dr. Syn. The talk was based on the Dr Syn books by Russell Thorndike who based his characters on real people of Dymchurch and the Romney Marsh.
The Marsh had its own judicial system until 1932 and was known as The Fifth Continent. Smuggling was rife on the marsh (and probably still is albeit in a different form) with alcohol and tobacco coming in and wool going out. We were told of secret tunnels which went between the Ship Inn, Dymchurch church and the New/Old Hall. Martin’s slides were excellent as were his anecdotes and amusing asides and perhaps he will have inspired some of us to read the Dr Syn book
Mary Hunter gave the vote of thanks.
The competition was won by Kay Hygate with her painting of a Summer tea.
