January 2024

President Julie Andrews welcomed 35 members and 5 visitors to the January meeting. Marjorie Mitchell was thanked for her flower arrangement for the President’s table. The hostesses Molly Morris and Julia Mander were also thanked.

Safety matters were again stressed and it was pointed out that we have a revised risk assessment for our monthly meetings and a second one for our walk group. Wendy and Nicky have kindly agreed to be our hall first aiders and a new portable first aid kit has been purchased for use outside the hall.

Members were reminded that the EKF Annual Council Meeting is on 19 March; that the cost of the ticket to attend the meeting is £16.00 with booking through ticket source or via our new Treasurer Margaret W. Tricia will be our delegate.

Daphne read out a very warm email of thanks from Pilgrim’s Hospice for our Christmas donation. We also heard a thank you email from the Air ambulance for the donation made from the raffle of the patchwork table runner and mats.

Margaret reminded members that Subs are due next month and can be paid by bank transfer or by cheque at the February meeting.

After a shorter than normal coffee break as soon as the raffle was drawn we settled down to enjoy a talk about the history of belly dancing with Vanessa Culliford

During her talk Vanessa demonstrated 2 dances for us and told us about the ancient origins of belly dancing carried out by groups of ladies for their own entertainment.

She also showed us many photos of belly dancers throughout history. Then Vanessa got a group of volunteers to come up and after a brief ‘lesson’ they all joined her in a final dance – getting a well deserved clap from the audience.

At the end of a very relaxing and fun morning Marjorie gave the vote of thanks.
