The President welcomed our speaker Alison Gardiner who was at her home in Southsea. Alison is a designer and illustrator who started her talk with details of her father a designer and painter who had worked on the Festival of Britain exhibition and who knew many of the leading textile designers of the day. This inspired Alison to become a designer. During her foundation year at St. Albans Art College a tutor, who was also an agent for a greetings card company, suggested that she sent her designs to the company which were accepted. After graduating from the West Surrey College of Art and Textile Design Alison joined the company full time but after eight months, she went freelance so that she could make her own designs.
We were show examples of her work including cards, wrapping paper, magazine and children’s books illustrations. Alison has designed Advent Calendars for the Royal Collection, the National Trust, Highgrove House, Cathedrals and many other organisations.
Alison also showed us her designs for a mug for the Hampshire WI Federation. Below to left is her first sketch on her ideas of what the WI stood for, but that did not go down well at all ! On the right is the design that was finally accepted to be used for not only Hampshire Federation, but many others including our own East Kent Federation.
Another design made by Alison for Denman College.
We also saw a short video of how Alison draws and paints her original artwork and we had a sneak preview of her designs for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.
Alison’s talk was a fascinating insight to the world of design and illustration.
Jackie Vickerman gave the vote of thanks.
