President Margaret Alcock welcomed 24 members to the January meeting held on Zoom. Apologies for absence were noted and the record of the December meeting was read, approved and signed.
Lynda Daly gave a short financial report and reminded members that due to the pandemic the NFWI had extended the subscription year until 1st April 2021.
Julie Andrews said that the Blog is still being well used and that the programme for the coming year was now on the website. The President then congratulated Margaret Gradden on winning Castle Green WI’s annual Spot the Mistake on the Programme competition!
After a short break during which members could ask questions and generally catch up with each other we welcomed our speaker Debbie Towlson (from Titchfield in Hampshire) who was going to demonstrate the art of canape making, The President remined members to pay attention as in March we will be holding a canape competition!
Debbie told us about her early career as a chef and then as a teacher before launching a third career as a personal chef and demonstrator.
She started with Gruyere & Dijon “Souffle” Tarts and took us through the process step by step with many useful tips along the way. She followed this with Goats cheese and Thyme Biscottini. Again, Debbie gave us useful tips as to how we could adapt the recipe and which elements could be made in advance and tips on storage.
After the meeting Debbie kindly emailed the recipes for the canapes and for the spiced beetroot and orange chutney she used as a garnish. Julie has forwarded these to members so that they can practice for the March competition. Debbie is looking forward to seeing photos of our efforts. No pressure!
Mandy Elson gave the vote of thanks for an excellent demonstration which was heartily endorsed by everyone.
